Researching RE 8211 Approaches and Perspectives from the Study of Religions

Religion Education (RE) is a rather new area of research within the study of religions. Theological approaches still dominate RE research internationally. This seminar will present and discuss different approaches to RE as a field of research as well as provide insight in recent debates about RE. The following areas will be covered: 1) Mapping RE as field of research: confessional and non-confessional RE, legal framework, curricula, textbooks and teaching 2) RE in school: teaching about religion or producing religion 3) What is a textbook? Perspectives on textbooks in RE and the study of religions 4) The world religions paradigm in the study of religion and RE: on the uses and misuses of comparison 5) Christianity as cultural heritage in RE: The ‘Religious literacy’ debate and the dilemma of quantitative emphasis on Christianity 6) New religious movements in RE 7) Recent development in theories on religion – of relevance for RE? 8) Conflict, violence and extremism: disruptive themes or possibilities for learning about religion? 9) Secular worldviews and the non-religious in RE 10) The study of religions scholar researching RE: critic, caretaker and/or creator? This seminar is held in English and the number of participants is limited to 25 students. Registration (via Stud.IP) is possible from September 1 until Ocotober 1. All information, including texts, will be made available on Stud.IP, students are asked to check for updates regularly. Students may earn 5 ECTS by regular active participation. It is also possible to take the course as -Schlüsselkompetenzen” or -Sprachpraxis”, in which case the course gives 2 ECTS, involving a small oral or written work in English. It is possible to take an oral examination (Prüfungsleistung FüBA, MAed, Zertifikatsstudium) as part of the course. The deadline for registration for the oral exam is September 15. Students who want to register for the oral exam need to notify Prof. Alberts by email by September 15. Registration for the oral examination is binding. The oral examination will be held in English and is based on the reading list (the texts are to be read before the beginning of the seminar) as well as the discussions in class.
