Notifications management
How do I set up my phone notifications so I'm not constantly distracted?
Projekt-Plan
{{whyLabel}}: You cannot optimize what you haven't measured; knowing your daily 'ping' count identifies the biggest offenders.
{{howLabel}}:
- Open 'Screen Time' (iOS) or 'Digital Wellbeing' (Android).
- Navigate to the 'Notifications' section.
- Note the top 5 apps with the highest notification counts over the last 7 days.
{{doneWhenLabel}}: You have a written list of your top 5 most frequent distractor apps.
{{whyLabel}}: A system-wide approach requires treating different types of information with different levels of urgency.
{{howLabel}}:
- Tier 1 (Critical): Real-time human interaction (Calls, direct DMs from VIPs).
- Tier 2 (Active): Important but not urgent (Calendar, Work Slack during hours).
- Tier 3 (Passive): Informational (News, Social Media likes, Newsletters).
- Tier 4 (Junk): Pure noise (Marketing, Games, App updates).
{{doneWhenLabel}}: Every app on your home screen is assigned to one of these four tiers.
{{whyLabel}}: Modern OS features (iOS 18+ / Android 15+) can use on-device AI to summarize long threads into a single, non-distracting update.
{{howLabel}}:
- iOS: Go to Settings > Notifications > Summarize Notifications and toggle it ON.
- Android: Go to Settings > Notifications > Notification Cooldown or 'Enhanced Notifications'.
- Select all 'Tier 3' apps to be included in this summary instead of individual pings.
{{doneWhenLabel}}: Non-urgent notifications are bundled into a single summary delivered at specific times.
{{whyLabel}}: Batching notifications prevents the 'slot machine' effect of constant random interruptions.
{{howLabel}}:
- Set your first summary for 30 minutes after you start work.
- Set your second summary for after lunch.
- Set your final summary for 1 hour before your 'Digital Sunset'.
{{doneWhenLabel}}: You have exactly 2-3 scheduled windows where Tier 3 notifications appear.
{{whyLabel}}: A dedicated mode ensures that only 'Tier 1' (Critical) alerts can break your concentration during high-value tasks.
{{howLabel}}:
- Create a new Focus/Mode named 'Deep Work'.
- Silence all apps except for specific 'Allowed People' (e.g., spouse, boss).
- Enable 'Dim Lock Screen' to reduce visual temptation when the phone is nearby.
{{doneWhenLabel}}: A 'Deep Work' mode is active and accessible via your control center.
{{whyLabel}}: Red dots are designed to trigger anxiety and a 'need to clear' response, leading to mindless app opening.
{{howLabel}}:
- Go to Settings > Notifications.
- For every app (except perhaps Phone/Messages), toggle 'Badges' to OFF.
- Prioritize removing badges from Social Media and Email apps.
{{doneWhenLabel}}: Your home screen icons are clean and free of red numbered circles.
{{whyLabel}}: Seeing the content of a message on your lock screen triggers a cognitive load even if you don't unlock the phone.
{{howLabel}}:
- In Notification settings, change 'Show Previews' to 'When Unlocked' or 'Never'.
- This forces you to be intentional about reading messages rather than being 'pushed' information.
{{doneWhenLabel}}: Your lock screen only shows the app icon/name, not the message content.
{{whyLabel}}: A test phase reveals if your filters are too aggressive or if 'Tier 4' apps are still sneaking through.
{{howLabel}}:
- Commit to the new settings for one full week.
- If you feel 'FOMO' (Fear Of Missing Out), check the 'Scheduled Summary' instead of changing settings.
- Keep a small note of any 'Critical' info you actually missed (usually, it's zero).
{{doneWhenLabel}}: You have completed 7 days without reverting to 'Allow All' settings.
{{whyLabel}}: Your needs change; a weekly check ensures the system stays lean and doesn't suffer from 'notification creep'.
{{howLabel}}:
- Every Sunday, check your 'Notifications' count in Screen Time again.
- If an app has moved into the top 5 that shouldn't be there, move it to 'Tier 3' (Summary) or 'Tier 4' (Off).
- Adjust Focus Mode 'Allowed People' if necessary.
{{doneWhenLabel}}: You have a recurring calendar invite for a 5-minute notification review.
