How do I tune up my bicycle for the spring riding season?

Why: Having everything at hand prevents interruptions and ensures you use the correct tools for delicate components.
How:
- Collect a set of metric hex keys (2mm-8mm), a Phillips screwdriver, and a torque wrench.
- Prepare cleaning supplies: a bucket of warm water, biodegradable bike cleaner, a soft brush, and a microfiber cloth.
- Get a floor pump with a pressure gauge and specific chain lubricant.
Done when: All tools and cleaning agents are laid out next to the bicycle.
Why: Dirt and salt from winter storage can hide cracks in the frame and accelerate wear on moving parts.
How:
- Spray the frame with cleaner and let it sit for 2-3 minutes (avoid direct high pressure on bearings).
- Use a soft brush for the frame and a stiffer brush for the cassette and chainrings.
- Rinse with a gentle stream of water and dry thoroughly with a cloth to prevent rust.
Done when: The bike is free of visible dirt, grease buildup, and road salt.
Why: A worn chain will quickly destroy expensive cassettes and chainrings if not replaced in time.
How:
- Use a chain checker tool; if the 0.75% side drops in, the chain needs replacement.
- If you don't have a tool, measure 12 complete links: they should be exactly 12 inches (30.48 cm). If it's over 12 1/16 inches, replace it.
- Check for stiff links by back-pedaling slowly.
Done when: You know exactly if your chain is safe to ride or needs replacement.
Why: Proper lubrication reduces friction, prevents rust, and ensures crisp shifting.
How:
- Apply one drop of lubricant to each individual roller while back-pedaling.
- Let it soak in for 5 minutes, then use a clean rag to wipe off ALL excess oil from the outside.
- Use 'Dry Lube' for dusty conditions or 'Wet Lube' if you expect spring rain.
Done when: The chain is lubricated internally but feels dry to the touch on the outside.
Why: Worn pads significantly increase stopping distance and can damage rims or rotors.
How:
- Rim brakes: Ensure grooves are still visible; if the pad is smooth, replace it.
- Disc brakes: Remove pads and check thickness; if the friction material is less than 1.5mm, replace them.
- Sand the pads slightly with fine-grit sandpaper if they appear 'glazed' or shiny.
Done when: Brake pads are confirmed to have sufficient thickness and a clean surface.
Why: Cables stretch over time, leading to a 'mushy' feel and poor braking performance.
How:
- Turn the barrel adjuster at the lever or caliper to take up slack.
- Ensure pads hit the rim/rotor squarely and simultaneously.
- If the lever pulls all the way to the handlebar, loosen the anchor bolt, pull the cable tighter, and re-tighten.
Done when: Brakes engage fully when the lever is pulled about 1/3 of the way to the grip.
Why: Tires lose air over winter (permeation) and rubber can develop dry-rot cracks.
How:
- Inspect sidewalls for cracks and the tread for embedded glass or sharp debris.
- Inflate to the recommended PSI range printed on the tire sidewall (usually lower for comfort/grip, higher for speed).
- Spin the wheels to check for 'trueness' (wobbling); if they wobble more than 2mm, they need professional truing.
Done when: Tires are at the correct pressure and show no signs of structural failure.
Why: Vibrations can loosen bolts, which is a major safety hazard, especially for handlebars and pedals.
How:
- Check the stem bolts (usually 4-6 Nm), seatpost clamp, and crank bolts.
- Ensure pedals are tight (remember: left pedal is reverse-threaded).
- Tighten any loose accessories like mudguards, racks, or bottle cages.
Done when: All critical bolts are tightened to the manufacturer's torque specifications.
Why: A controlled test ride identifies issues like gear skipping or strange noises before you go on a long trip.
How:
- Ride in a safe, flat area away from traffic.
- Shift through all gears to ensure smooth transitions.
- Perform several controlled stops to bed in the brakes.
- Listen for clicks, squeaks, or rattles that might indicate loose parts.
Done when: The bike shifts, brakes, and handles perfectly during a 5-minute ride.
