With the ideas of enlightenment coming into effekt in the 18 th century however, the concept of matrimony shifted to some extent, so that love and passion became basic elements. Instead of being foremost seen as a production unit in which feelings for each other would certainly arise after marriage, the couple should first of all be soulmates, attracted to each other by deep emotions. Although reality in the 19 th century often differed from this ideal and mutual attraction, love and passion depended deeply on similar social backgrounds, this idea of partnership lasts until today.
But this new ideal of partnership also contained new concepts of gender roles. In the late 18 th century the distinction between men and women, instead of being one of different degrees, became a question of varying characters, to which different roles and spheres in society were enclosed. While men were affiliated with the public, women were restrained to the private sphere.
These concepts of matrimony and gender roles of the 19 th century until recently appeared to be unquestionable in social reality as well as in academic discourse and research. Amongst others, one aim of the course therefore is to identify and deconstruct the concepts in order to see their conditionality and the possibility to challenge them.
