2. LENGTH, AIM & TOPICS 2.1. Length and class hours
This module runs from 15 June to 30 June inclusive. The first lecture is on Wednesday 15 June beginning at 6 pm. The final session (examination) will be Thursday 30th June beginning at 9am.
2.2. Aim
The overall aims of the module is to:
• Develop an understanding of the role of operations management in the context of organisations.
• Introduce and develop an appreciation of operations management principles and techniques so as to be able to apply this knowledge in practice.
• Develop the ability to analyse specific operational problems and to propose solutions.
• Develop an understanding of the whole systems approach to achieve levels of world class performance for organisations.

1 Contemporary Management Issues
2 Organisational policy and operational objectives
3 Customer service and resource utilisation
4 Product/Service development
5 Planning, implementation and control
6 Facilities management, including location and layout issues
7 Forecasting
8 Capacity management and strategies
9 Scheduling and network analysis
10 Inventory management and the supply chain
11 Quality management and world class performance. Philosophy and tools and techniques
12 Performance measurement
Total systems approach.
3. OVERALL APPROACH
The module is facilitated through a combination of lectures, case studies, videos, readings, group and individual exercises and project work. The emphasis is on learning through participation and practical application.
Both the learning and assessment strategies are intended to foster the development of capabilities, skills and understanding in the: Application of knowledge, conceptual thinking, problem solving, communication, teamwork, research, and use of relevant techniques and technology.
4. LEARNING OUTCOMES
By the end of this module students will be able to:
• Critically understand the role and functions of middle management, and of contemporary management issues
• Understand operational objectives within the context of the wider business environment
• Offer solutions for specific day to day operational problems and issues
• Distinguish and Identify key considerations in establishing a departmental control system and the management of performance
• Apply the principles and philosophy of quality management and the value/supply chain
• Prepare a Change Management Plan.
5. DEVELOPMENT OF STUDENT CAPABILITIES
In this module, the following capabilities and skills will be enhanced:
APPLICATION OF KNOWLEDGE
By the analysis of actual management practice, compared and contrasted with existing management theory.
TEAMWORK AND COMMUNICATION
Through group work in problem solving.
TECHNICAL COMPETENCE
Through applying appropriate methods and techniques to the resolution of a variety of operational problems
