International Trade and Investment: Analysing Growth and Stagnation of Japanese Economy after the World War II Contents: The lecture will cover factors that ensured the economic success of the most promising country in the world economy (until the end of the 80s of the twentieth century) and the reasons for the weakening economic position of the country since the early 90s of the twentieth century. The analysis will focus on the internal situation in the country, but the main emphasis will be placed on the external relations of Japan, as the country is highly dependent on external links. Japan was seen as a successful country that in less than 30 years transformed its ruined post-war economy in a dynamically developing economic center of the world. Rapid economic development was a reason to include the country in the 70s to the so called triad of international economic relations. The boom lasted until the late 80s of twentieth century. Then economic problems of the country began and, beside relatively short periods of improving, the situation continues to deteriorate to this day. Economic stagnation and financial crisis are the most common descriptions of the condition of the Japanese economy, especially in the last decade of the twentieth century. This decade has even gained a name of -lost decade-. In the next several years, despite periodic improvements, the country's economic conditions has not changed fundamentally. The global financial crisis has also affected Japan, since the collapse of international trade adversely affected the trade balance of the country, resulting in a drastic decrease in the absolute value of economic growth.
