Blockseminar North American Christianity Past und Present Nordamerikanisches Christentum Geschichte und Gegenwart

The development of Christianity in North America rather seldom occurs in a European perspective. Nevertheless, a period of half a millennium since the beginning of colonization in 1492 offers an impressive religious panorama. While on the one hand church and state are strictly separated in the U.S., society and religion do appear extensively mingled on the other hand. The seminar wants to historically trace the differentiation of Christianity on the North American continent into a variety of -denominations- and at the same time asks for the repercussions of -American- religiosity for the European context. In view of the internationalization of studies, the seminar will be held in English. Therefore, good English skills are essential. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Die Entwicklung des Christentums in Nordamerika kommt aus europäischer Perspektive eher selten in den Blick. Gleichwohl bietet das halbe Jahrtausend seit Beginn der Kolonialisierung im Jahr 1492 ein beeindruckendes religiöses Panorama. Während auf der einen Seite in den USA Staat und Kirche streng getrennt sind, zeigen sich auf der anderen Seite Gesellschaft und Religion zutiefst vermischt. Das Seminar sucht die Ausdifferenzierung des Christentums auf dem nordamerikanischen Kontinent zu einer Vielzahl von -denominations- historisch nachzuzeichnen und fragt zugleich nach den Rückwirkungen -amerikanischer- Religiosität auf den europäischen Kontext. Im Zuge der Internationalisierung des Studiums wird das Seminar auf Englisch gehalten. Deshalb sind gute Englischkenntnisse unbedingte Voraussetzung. • Sydney E.
