The design seminar aims to provide a bridge towards the world of physical design, its approaches, perspectives and implications. Approaching this field, the students will be introduced to the viewpoint and methods of Dutch design as example of a current and prominent movement in the contemporary design scene. To tackle our physical design-challenge, we will apply conceptual design techniques such as design vision techniques, the perspective of design for interaction and field explorations, to create design visions and designs.
Another core theme in the seminar will be tactility: In a world of increasing digitalization, the realm of tactile experiences is diminishing and the risk of a tactilely deprived object-world is increasing. Therefore our aim will be to reintroduce interesting tactile experiences to tactilely deprived everyday-objects by means of add-ons. Based on examples and findings from our field explorations, we will create physical prototypes of these design inventions and interventions.
Next to the scientific perspective, the seminar also searches to inspire a very visual and visceral perspective and will provide a lot of visual input and opportunities for field exploration, active participation and practical designing.
Keywords:
Product design, Design for Interaction, Design Vision, Dutch Design, Basic principles of Graphic design. Tactility, Manual physical prototyping (Silicone molding etc.), basic use of the faculty’s 3D printer (but no need for 3D modelling skills, as the prototype building will be manual).
Required materials:
Digital photo-camera or digital photo device. Best also: Possibility to record short digital videos.
Laptop (if possible).Craft materials: Magazines for collages, scissors, glue, pens, other small materials according to tasks.
Practical information:
The seminar will be held in four weekend-blocks:
Block 1: 18.10.+19.10.2014: 11 a.m.-1.30 p.m + 2 p.m.-5.30 p.m.; Block 2: 01.11.+02.11.2014: 11 a.m.-1.30 p.m + 2 p.m.-5.30 p.m.; Block 3: 22.11.2014: 11 a.m.-1.30 p.m + 2 p.m.-5.30 p.m. + 23.11.2014: 11 a.m.-1.30 p.m + 2 p.m.-3.30 p.m.; Block4: Final presentations 13.12.2014: 11 a.m.-1.30 p.m + 2 p.m.-5.30 p.m.. Presence at all four blocks is mandatory.
