Hauptseminar Shakespeare's Comedies

This seminar is taught in two languages (English and German) with the kind support of Michael Volk, dramaturge at the Kasseler Staatstheater. We will examine the theory and practice of plays and their production on stage. The seminar starts with a close look at the conditions of theatre in Shakespeare´s own time, proceed with a thorough analysis of exemplary plays and will be rounded off with a practical part: accompanying the production of one Shakespeare play on the Staatstheater´s modern stage. You can only participate if you are a) very motivated and b) willing to attend >>> additional meetings at the Staatstheater Kassel <<<, sometimes in the afternoon, sometimes in the evening. Dieses Seminar wird zweisprachig unterrichtet, Englisch und Deutsch, und zwar mit der freundlichen Unterstützung von Michael Volk, dem Schauspieldramaturg des Kasseler Staatstheaters. Wir werden die Theorie und Praxis von Dramen und Drameninszenierungen auf der Bühne untersuchen. Das Seminar fängt an mit einer genauen Untersuchung der Aufführungsbedingungen in Shakespeares eigener Zeit, es wird sich im Mittelteil mit einer detaillierten Analyse exemplarischer Dramen befassen, um dann mit einem praktischen Teil zu schließen: der Begleitung einer Shakespeare-Inszenierung auf der modernen Bühne des Staatstheaters Kassel. Sie können nur dann an diesem Seminar teilnehmen, wenn Sie a) sehr motiviert sind und b) bereit sind, an zusätzlichen Sitzungen des Seminars im Staatstheater teilzunehmen, manchmal nachmittags, manchmal abends. VoraussetzungenThe course is open to all students who have successfully completed at least one Proseminar in literary studies (please bring your Schein). MA, L3 and Diploma students must also have passed their mid-study exams. Additionally, participants must have finished reading at least A Midsummer Night's Dream prior to the start of the term. If the class is too large, there will be a test to check this. Participation will then only be possible for those who have finished reading the text. Regular and active participation, including an oral report, is required of everyone. It is mandatory that you turn up for the first meeting, no exceptions. As mentioned above, you will have to attend all additional meetings of this class (dates will be fixed during the first meeting), otherwise you will not be able to obtain credits.
