The adequate use of learning strategies plays a major role in successful language learning. Students need strategies to become autonomous learners, e.g. when reading an English text. Have you ever wondered how to actually teach learning strategies in school? How can you as future teachers help your students understand English texts? This will be the focus of our seminar. You will gain in-depth insights into current research on learning strategies, reading and self-regulated learning. Besides we will focus on teaching methods to help students use adequate strategies. You will have the possibility to observe videos of students (grade 9, schools in Hesse) working with texts to find out what students do (i.e. which strategies they use) while reading. You will also see teacher videos to get an idea what they do to support their students. The seminar will take place as blended learning seminar, i.e. the combination of face-to-face and online sessions. Class meetings will take place every second week. During the online sessions, you will work on video-based tasks in Moodle. In this seminar, theory and practice are linked to help you prepare for your future job. You will have the chance to work with students (grade 9) and practically implement your knowledge to support students in school during a text-based lesson. Finkbeiner, Claudia. (2005). Interessen und Strategien beim fremdsprachlichen Lesen. Wie Schülerinnen und Schüler englische Texte lesen und verstehen. Tübingen: Narr. A course reader will be available at Copy Blitz at the beginning of the semester. You will also find the texts online in our Moodle course (access after first seminar).
