The scope of Landscape Architecture is potentially vast. Climate change, urban poverty, spiking refugee streams and rapidly growing or shrinking cities are just one set of a series of complex phenomena that generally defy simple solutions. Changing climatic, environmental, social and cultural realities require special knowledge to engage complex problems through landscape architectural means. It is central to this seminar to study the various aspects of emerging challenges on a global level and to uncover distinctive strategies for the profession of landscape architecture. As a master student one should attain a level of expertise to not only solve problems that are brought forward by outside entities such as municipal governments or private clients, but define one’s own topic and scope of involvement. Therefore one overarching goal of the seminar is to enable students to perform independent problem finding and formulation skills on a global scale. The seminar consists of three components: a Lecture Series, a Skills Workshop and a Research Exercise. In the lecture series invited practitioners and the instructors of the seminar will alternately talk about emerging topics. Students will be assigned texts that relate to the speakers topics. In the skills workshops students will perform short exercises to learn specific mapping and research proficiencies. In the research exercise students will formulate and pursue a specific research question that is related to an overarching theme for the whole seminar. The findings will be put in graphic form and critiqued. The seminar concludes with a final presentation of the research exercise. The seminar will be conducted in English. Schäfer, Heike, Dipl.-Ing.
