What is Moby Dick? A blubbery bane churning the reading main of stateside teens, a white whale of a tome tipping the scales at six hundred paginated tons, and a world classic swimming the seven paperback seas of the print medium globe in the Penguin Fleet and under the flag of the Oxford Regatta. Sounds like a lot of reading? Not at all, when my patented carve-it-up, save-the-best, share-the-fun, and throw-overboard-the-rest method is not so much frivolously as rigorously applied to the 135 chapters signed on for Melville’s narrative voyage. The chapters – as Captain Ahab and Ishmael no doubt would agree if consulted on this point – are little-bitty bowls of plankton, and every two weeks each course participant will be responsible for processing and serving up several of these dainty dishes of three to six pages to fellow crew members. What is planned for the first class session? The required text is available in Penguin and Oxford paperback editions.
