Meaning and Grammar Blockseminar

This seminar will focus on the -how and why of meaning” (Halliday/Webster). We will analyse the semantic architecture of English grammar in order to understand how linguistic items come to mean what they do. The goal is for students to gain familiarity with the academic tools that provide a framework for analysing questions of meaning precisely. We will explore meaning on various linguistic levels, be it words, phrases, clauses, sentences or texts. Some time will also be devoted to discussing the notions of tense, aspect and modality (TAM) that are considered to be the most important aspects of grammar analysis. If time permits, we will investigate further topics based on students’ own interests. These may include rhetorical figures (metaphor, irony) or contrastive issues (English compared to German or Spanish). Please check Stud.IP for updates and additional information as the semester approaches. -Wichtiger Hinweis: Diese Veranstaltung wird nicht als wöchentliche Veranstaltung angeboten (wie noch im gedruckten Vorlesungsverzeichnis aufgeführt), sondern als Blockseminar während der Vorlesungsunterbrechung (Pfingsten). Sie kann auch von Studierenden besucht werden, die LingF4 planmäßig erst im kommenden Wintersemester belegen müssten. Bitte beachten Sie, dass ohne Anwesenheit in der ersten Sitzung am 02.05. keine erfolgreiche Teilnahme am Seminar möglich ist. Die Prüfung kann aller Voraussicht nach durch eine Klausur erbracht werden.
