Smart Structures is an educational research project, cooperated between the Technical University of Delft (Architecture), the University of Tennessee (Architecture/Design) and the University of Kassel (Architecture/ Design). Overall topic of the project is to explore advanced digital techniques for designing, evaluating and manufacturing tectonic structures which are based on free formed surfaces. The goal of the project is to design and to actually build a collapsible exhibition pavilion for the University of Tennessee which then serves as technology carrier for design, computation and production of free formed building structures and serves as a showcase for all three participating universities. Project Structure
The project will be initiated by three workshops which will take place around middle to end of august in Delft, Kassel and Knoxville. In these three workshops students get a brief introduction in the basic digital design techniques which are required to successfully unroll the project. Then 10 design teams of 3 students (one of each university) are formed to start working on the project via CSCW (Computer Supported Collaborative Work), which means that the students of each team will work on their projects using the world wide web as common communication and development platform. Each team will make one detailed design proposal for the pavilion. An internal competetion will be held to decide, which one of the 10 proposals design finally is going to be realized. The project will be supported by different teaching stuff from all three universities. Details
More details about the project will come on tuesday, april 18th, - at the project presentation of the department of product design.
