In 2008/2009 Europe’s economies were hit by the hardest economic crisis for decades. In many countries this period was followed by a recovery starting in 2010. Numerous empirical studies using aggregate data at the level of countries, regions or industries have been published that contribute to our understanding of the economic developments during these turbulent times.
What is still lacking, however, are regional case studies that go beyond macroeconomic mechanisms in order to reveal the specific interplay of local and non-local determinants in the form of dynamic, path-dependent processes which either support or hamper a region’s ability to absorb the consequences of an external economic shock.
Content
In this M-project, students will acquire skills enabling them to apply the concept of economic resilience to the business location of Dortmund. With respect to the Great Recession of 2008/2009, three research questions will be addressed in particular:
1) Has Dortmund performed better or worse? How can the economic resilience of Dortmund be evaluated in comparison with other German and non-German regions?
2) Economic structure, innovative capacities, or regional governance? What determines the (non-)resilience of Dortmund’s economy?
3) What are the policy recommendations for the city of Dortmund as well as for individual town districts?
