Teaching EFL listening and speaking in a playful way
Learning a foreign language (L2) undoubtedly includes various complex processes. Learners do not only have to learn a different alphabet with different sounds, grammar and vocabulary, but are also confronted with several cultural aspects.
However, research on how children learn their mother tongue has given important insights on how to learn a second language.
In this seminar, we are going to discuss how languages are learned: What is the difference between acquiring and learning a language? When is learning most effective? How can teachers support their learners? How can we teach the phonetic alphabet in a meaningful way? How can we motivate young learners to speak? What do school books have to offer? Do children learn more effectively when learning processes take place in a playful and holistic way?
We are going to focus on the skills listening and speaking (for beginners). Different listening activities are going to be presented, tested and evaluated. Numerous exercises on how to make students speak are going to be analysed.
Students of L1, L2 and L3 are welcome. Excursions to the Grundschullernwerkstatt and integrierte Studienwerkstatt are part of the seminar in which students get the chance to have a look at how listening and speaking activities are offered in school books.
Students are asked to give presentations and to read the given literature.
