This course will be examining popular culture of Turkey from 1980s onwards by focusing on its cultural productions, i.e. pop music, cinema, periodical cartoons and comics, newspapers, novels, TV series and advertisements. Putting these cultural productions in their political context of post-1980 military coup in Turkey, this course will try to answer following questions: What is popular culture today and what was it in the 1980s? What are the socio-political components of popular culture in Turkey? Who was allowed to appear on public television and who was not? The cases of Bar Manço and Bülent Ersoy will be examined in this context. Further, establishment of arabesk music as a genre in Turkey and the productions of its representatives such as Orhan Gencebay, Müslüm Gürses will be discussed. Popular protest music Ahmet Kaya, Grup Yorum will be part of this course in the context of unresolved claims of equality and issues related to popular lynch campaigns in Turkey. Contemporary products of popular culture will also be included. Thus, interviews, films of Fatih Akin, Nuri Bilgi Ceylan and parts of novels of Orhan Pamuk will be discussed. As these products of popular culture formed the lives of the lecturers offering this course, namely Talin Suciyan and Nevra Lischewski, they too will bring their own experiences throughout this seminar.
