Prerequisites Fundamental knowledge of micro economics, macro economics, and economic policy   Course requirements Exam (40%) Seminar paper, presentation, attendance, and active oral participation (60%) It is required to pass all parts of the course in oder to earn a final grade.   Course description This class is supposed to deal with important features and configurations of Economic and Monetary Unions (EMU). Interested students will gain insight into the economic concepts laying at the heart of optimal currency areas, their costs and benefits, and the corresponding implications for monetary and fiscal policy.   The course will be divided into two parts - a lecture part and a seminar part. There will be a kickoff-meeting at 20.10.2016, where all organisational issues are clarified. The lecture part starts at 27.10.2016 and introduces the core economic concepts of EMUs and is held by Benjamin Schwanebeck and Philipp Kirchner. This part ends with an exam at 15.12.2016. In the second part of the semester, roughly after winter break, the seminar part starts. Each participant is required to give a presentation about a previously chosen topic. In addition, participants have to write and hand in a supplementary seminar paper. At the kickoff-meeting we will describe each topic. Afterwards, the participants have to send two preferred topics (indicating first and second priority) to schwanebeck@uni-kassel.de within one week. The allocation of the topics will be based on these preferences and on a first-come-first-serve basis.   Some selected topics (visit our homepage for the full set of topics) • Optimal currency areas • Costs and benefits of monetary unions • Optimal monetary and fiscal policy in a currency area • The implications of BREXIT for UK and the euroarea • The econommic implications of migration • Sovereign debt crises FB 07 Institut für Volkswirtschaftslehre Knowledge of VWL I + II + III Uni Kassel WiSe 2016/17 Lehrveranstaltungspool FB 07 M.A. Schwanebeck Benjamin M.A
