BV: 5.5. ab 14 Uhr; 6.5. + 7.5., 8-17 Uhr; 19.5. ab 14 Uhr; 20. + 21.5.06, 8-17 Uhr, R. 1102, AB 10 The economic effects of the judiciary have long been entirely neglected by both economists and legal scholars. This seminar will make the participants familiar with the most important papers that have appeared over the last 30 years. Aspects that will be covered by the papers include - among others - - the significance of the spread of the notion of -judicial review- - the relevance of legal origins (e.g. civil law vs. common law) for economic development, - the relevance of the differences between legal systems with a Supreme Court vs. those with a Constitutional Court, - the significance of the rising number of lawyers observed in a number of countries, - the growth effects of the independence of the judiciary, - the growth (and other) effects of a corrupt judiciary, - the determinants that lead judicial systems to be factually more or less independent. The seminar will be held in English. A thorough command of the English language is hence absolutely necessary. In addition, participants should be familiar with microeconomics as well as with the central notions of public choice (i.e. the economic theory of politics) It is expected that all participants present one paper in the course of the seminar. In order to get a -Schein-, an exam at the end of the semester will be offered. FB 07 Wirtschaftswissenschaften Uni Kassel SS2006 Professor Voigt Stefan Professor
