This undergraduate seminar aims at investigating the urban processes of production of space introducing the politics of space. Starting with the discussions on 'what is political' (such as Jaques Ranciere, Chantal Mouffe etc.), and what could ‘the politics of space' stand for, in thes seminar it is intended to analyze the specific cases to find out the power relations within the encounters that produce the everyday life performances and conflicts in both public and domestic space. From gentrification, urban transformation and mega city events to Streetarts, misuse value of space, neighborhood festivals and protests,politics of the social and physical production of space will be discussed through specific cases in relation to the theoretical framework. Theories of politics of space such as Henry Lefebvre's the production of space and the right to the city, theories of urban commons, urban movements and protests in relation to production of space, politics of city marketing, and identity politics of space will be introduced and discussed in the seminar. Concepts like authenticity, ethnicity, gender, inclusion, exclusion, enclousure, subjectivation will be addressed in the investigation of the cases. Participants will be expected to bring in case studies to elaborate the introduced theorethical approaches together with the discoursive and practical dimensions of the politics of spatial intervention through a critical ethnographical perspective.
