Seminar Quantitative Methods in Post Communist Studies

The multiplicity of pathways and outcomes of post-Communist transition provides a fruitful background for investigating causal effects of policies, institutions and external conditions on the development of economies and societies using large-N studies. However, there are also numerous pitfalls and problems in applying statistical methods to studying post-Communist transition – from incorrect interpretation of data to questionable methods. The seminar engages the modern quantitative large-N literature on post-Communist countries of Eurasia and Eastern Europe. Its goal is both to review a number of useful econometric techniques and in particular to discuss their practical application in studying the post-Communist countries. In terms of the methods, the main focus of the seminar is on identification of causal effects, as this is the most typical problem in large-N studies; however, we also look at a number of other problems (in particular, outliers, model selection etc.). We will also address typical datasets available for studying post-Communist countries at the national and sub-national levels. As such, the seminar addresses both interested in the post-Communist countries and willing to improve their command of quantitative methods. We explicitly plan to focus on the application of methods in research practice rather than the theory. The students participating in the seminar are expected to have basic knowledge of inductive statistics, especially multivariate regression analysis and statistical hypothesis testing. The language of the seminar is English, but some explanations in German can be offered to participants along the way, if necessary.
