The role of sports for urban development finds increasingly attention of planners. In this seminar we will take a broader view and discuss the following topics: Informal sports, urban space, and temporary land use (parcours, cross-golf, skating, free-climbing). In recent years we observed that many sport activities do take not place any longer in particular functional environments (sports hall, stadium). Instead, the whole of urban space is turned into a sports facility (city marathon, cycling, nightlining, street ball, etc.). In some European cities, sports facilities for everyday use have been integrated into the urban fabric (for example along the Canal du Martin in Paris) . Do we as planners have to consider this in our work? Can we think of cities or urban areas planned as sport areas, i.e. sites for multiple uses? Certainly we have to distinguish between event-like urban sport such as beach volleyball tournaments in the city centre and broader sport activies for the citizens (open air fitness centres in parks, football fields). Stadiums as drivers for urban regeneration. Many cities use large sport events such as football world championchips or commonwealth games for urban development purposes. Stadiums and other sports facilities. We discuss cases controversial such as St. Denis in Paris to identify the strenghts and weaknesse of this strategy.
