Seminar Transforming Waterfront Perspectives for Post Industrial Port Cities Strategies 8211 Actors 8211 Governance

Since the end of the 20th century urban areas with heavy industries faced radical change. The economic structure shifted mainly towards service sector economy within a very short timeframe and together with globalization it had high impacts on the demographic and socio-economic structure of these regions. Traditional harbor cities are especially hit by negative impacts of structural change. It is not only that heavy industriesoften have a high proportion of economic output in those regions, itis also entangled with the logistic sector. The old industries abandoned former production facilities and left vast brownfield areas as well as inner city waste lands. Furthermore the -containerization” in international shipping causes shipping harbours and the connected, still working industries like shipyards to move from locations nearby inner cities further towards the ocean shores. The seminar focusses strategies, actors and governance of transformation processes in revitalizing old industrial areas and waterfronts. How do cities and regions handle these fallow waterfronts and former industrial areas? Could waterfront development be a chance for cities and regions to master structural change, fight the economic and structural crises And could it prepare cities and regions for the future challenges to come? • Which problems can be explored in post-industrial seaports? • Who are stakeholders in the renewing process, what are their interests, and how are they connected? • What strategies and instruments were used by local and regional stakeholders to overcome the challenges in revitalizing old industrial areas? Which impacts do already implemented revitalization efforts have in the cities and regions? Raumplanung M.Sc.
