In this seminar we will look at several plays by Shakespeare: Twelfth Night, Measure for Measure and As You Like It. The seminar discussion will be based on a close reading of the texts that will be complemented by a comparison of various stage and film productions of these three plays in which we want to have a closer look at how the text is transformed from the page to the stage. We will further examine the culture and theatre tradition of the Early Modern Period: the playhouses, the players as well as the literary tradition that Shakespeare drew from. Students are requested to obtain the three plays in critical editions.
Students attending the seminar also have the chance to attend a week-long excursion. In the last week of July (most likely 24-31 July) we will travel to London to watch these plays being performed on stage; we will also attend acting and directing workshops with professional theatre companies and visit the National Archives to look at Early Modern documents.
Students wishing to sign up for the seminar and excursion are advised to attend the info session prior to the seminar that takes place on Wednesday, 11 February 18 -20 in Schellingstr. 3 (S) Vg. - S 242
