This Business English course takes a discussion-based approach to language learning. The topic of the course is the financing of higher education in an international comparison. Language acquisition is sought through reading texts on the subject matter, holding presentations and discussion in class rather than through the passive reception of language teaching by the lecturer. A regular and active participation in the seminar is therefore essential. The course will be held in English. You should therefore speak enough English to understand the texts and participate in group work and discussions. However, your willingness to actively and frequently speak English is more important than an already perfect mastery of the language. Language mistakes will not be continuously corrected in class to allow a free flow of the discussions. An economic terminology will be gradually built up over the course of the semester. The course schedule is divided into three parts: Part 1: Work Methods · Methods of language learning · Tools of the trade (dictionaries and online dictionaries) · Presentation techniques · Essay writing Part 2: International case studies on the financing of higher education · The organisation of higher education in an international comparison · The financing of higher education with a special focus on tuition fees and student aid programs (grants and student loans) Part 3: Economic analysis of the financing of higher education · Synthesis of the conclusions from the case studies to a general economic model of higher education finance Requirements for obtaining a Schein: Students will be required to regularly and actively participate in the seminar, both in discussions and group work. Every student has to hold two short presentations (one purely for training purposes, the other one graded) and write an 8-12 pages essay. Should more than 25 students wish to participate in this class, lots will be drawn during the first session (tuesday, 18.04.2006). In order to get a place in class you therefore have to be present at this first session. FB 07 Wirtschaftswissenschaften Uni Kassel SS2006 Dr. Blume Tillmann
