Since its inception the European Union has been a fiercely contested and politically contentious project. In recent years, controversial issues such as EU enlargement, the ratification of the Lisbon Treaty, the consequence from the Eurozone crisis, the uncertainty on what a -Brexit” could mean, the on-going migration crisis have tested the EU to its limits and divided public opinion in the process. In view of these controversial issues, this seminar focuses on classical texts and debates of the EU integration research to discuss the nature and current state of the EU. The seminar addresses a number of key disputes in the research on the EU, from the early days of European integration to the current challenges. Among the issues discussed are: how efficient is the European Union? How democratic and legitimate is the EU as a political system? Has the European project been a success? Will the Eurozone survive in its present state? And can the EU tame big finance? What possible solutions are at hand for meeting the EU’s current challenges? After completing the seminar, students are expected to: possess in-depth knowledge and understanding of European integration as a political problem, acquire good knowledge of how European integration processes are being described and explained in classical research; obtain good understanding of how problems concerning democracy, legitimacy, representation, efficiency, enlargement, crises in the EU are being described and explained in scientific research on European integration.
