Übung Theorie 3 Émile Durkheim The Division of Labour in Society

In this course we will read Èmile Durkheim’s most influential book The Division of Labour in Society (1893). This masterpiece of sociological thinking is worth to be read because of at least three reasons. 1.) There is no better way to become acquainted with the central question of sociological thinking: How is social order possible? Although Durkheim’s solution to this problem cannot be accepted in all its aspects in the light of today’s theory-building, the question itself remains no doubt highly topical. In solving this problem Durkheim resourcefully conceptualizes modern society as a society which is in contrast to pre-modern societies differentiated in spheres like economy, politics, science and art. Although he distinguishes sharply between ‘division of labour’ and ‘differentiation’ and therefore does not use the term ‘functional differentiation’, this way of thinking has inspired all subsequent approaches, which deal with this concept in the 20th century (Parsons, Neofunctionalism, Habermas, Luhmann etc.). 2.) Durkheim’s monography is symptomatic for the moralistic and political tradition, which has influenced theory of society ever since. Whether we want to stick to this tradition or get rid of the bias it contains: We have to analyse it very closely. It is definitely not enough to follow sociologists like Bruno Latour and denounce Durkheim as a too metaphysical thinker. 3.) Durkheim’s book is a good starting point for sociological theory because it stems from an early stage of sociology, in which everyday concepts like ‘man’ have not been dissolved into more scientific concepts like ‘role’, ‘action’, ‘personal system’ or ‘social system’. Although Durkheim’s theoretical instruments are therefore not as developed as those of his successors it is for example still remarkable how he conceptualizes the relation between individual and society. Students will not only learn about Durkheim’s theory; the course will also discuss their relevance for today’s sociological thinking. Furthermore students will have the chance to read a challenging text very closely together and discuss problems which arise.
