In the last fifteen years, Transnational History has become a crucial historiographical trend. The transnational perspective transcends the nation-state framework with its focus on cross-border historical phenomena, such as cultural transfers, migrations, networks, encounters, etc. The transnational perspective has been applied to a wide range of topics, and the history of fascism is no exception. Thus, historians have highlighted the multi-faceted interrelations between the different fascist movements and regimes of the interwar period and beyond. The transnational perspective offers the prospect of a new definition of fascism. This Übung course offers students not only an introduction to the burgeoning historiographical field of ‘Transnational Fascism’, but also training in transnational historical research and comparative analysis. To what extent were Italian Fascism and German Nazism two expressions of a single historical phenomenon? Can the numerous paramilitary extreme-right groups in interwar Europe be subsumed under the unifying category of ‘Transnational Fascism’? How did European fascists reconcile their ultra-nationalism with their pan-European political projects? After this course, students will be able to provide answers to these and other questions. The course has an European focus. Italian Fascism and German Nazism will be examined as part of a wider European trend, including the Iberian Peninsula, France, Britain, the Balkans and Eastern Europe. The extra-European circulation of the fascist ideology will be also examined through other cases, including India, Argentina and Japan. The transnational dimension of neo-fascism will also be studied. The sessions will be based on the discussion of historiographical texts – in English and German – and on the analysis of primary sources – images, documents, maps, audiovisuals. A good command of English is required, but students are allowed to use German in the discussions and assignments. Prüfungsform im BA, mod.
