The causes and consequences of these revolts are examined especially in Ghana, Nigeria and Cameroon. The British and French colonial policies contributed to women revolts. The women mobilised against colonial officials, male regulatory societies and other institutions that were against their empowerment. After independence and with the re-introduction of multiparty politics in West Africa in the 1990s, women revolts were part of a political struggle for change in both the socio-economic and political domains. The consequences of their revolts were far-reaching.
