Amongst others we will take a close look at works of William Faulkner, Ernest Hemmingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Alice Walker, John Barth and John Steinbeck. During the course of the semester we will discover different narrative techniques and find out how stories work.

Herman, David (2007): The Cambridge Companion to Narrative (ISBN: 978-0-521-67366-2 paperback)
(This standard work is required reading material! We will work through the chapters during the course of the seminar.
You might get a used version of the work online.)
Short stories and further theoretical texts will be provided during the course of the semester.

Assigned texts have to be read and prepared thoroughly. Regular attendance is required.
Voraussetzungen
In order to be accepted to the seminar you have to send in an approximately 500 words long letter of motivation by October 10th (one week prior to the start of the seminar - DEADLINE EXTENDED, please contact me). This letter should include short information about your personal background (course and state of study) and reveal what you expect from the seminar. It should answer the question why you would like to attend this seminar and demonstrate your motivation.
An attendance of the seminar will not be possible without this introductory assignment. The assignment can be send to goessling@phil.uni-duesseldorf.de.
Only students who have completed the basic module in literary studies (Basismodul III: Literaturwissenschaft) are accepted to the seminar. Bring along verification (e.g. print from the LSF) to the first session. Students who miss the first session on October 17th or haven't sent in the introductory assignment will be withdrawn from the course list.

Leistungsnachweis
In order to obtain a BN, attendance and regular participation is mandatory. Texts have to be read, prepared for and brought along to the sessions. Assignments have to be completed reputedly and based on academic standards. They have to be handed in by the respective due dates. Each student will have to deliver a 10 to 15 minute presentation which has to be handed in in written form one week prior to the session of presentation. (Further details will be discussed in our first session).
Term papers and oral exams are possible.
Lerninhalte
We will look at general concepts of narrative theory such as narrative levels, focalization, character interiority or narrative perspective and gain competencies for a profound analysis of narrative fiction.
