This course will examine the tangled relationship between American politics and the movie industry with its unparalleled financial, technological, and human means. Since the 1930s current and past issues of the American political debate have provided the material for a constant stream of films cutting across all genres from spy movies to romantic comedies. Because they pull in massive audiences each year, their contribution to political discourse is considerable. Many of these films reflect national experiences, some create alternative history and perpetuate myths to appease their audiences. The liberal wing of the cinema industry often takes politicians to test on almost every issue. We will analyse a variety of films from to with special emphasis on mythmaking and dissent.
