This course focuses on the historical and structural development of the English language and how to systematically analyze its development: What for example are the objectives of historical linguistics? How exactly did the English language develop and what are the major changes within the History of English?Students will have the chance to exemplarily investigate into one linguistic topics of their choice. This topic may have already been discussed in the seminar or may alternatively be a topic concerning the English language that you always found interesting. These exemplary linguistic analyses will be organized and conducted in little groups which will then present their results in a short presentation at the end of the seminar.
Objectives
In the ‘Basismodule’ you already built up a very general understanding of the structure, type and historical development of the English language. This course now aims at consolidating and amplifying your linguistic knowledge. At the end of this term you should therefore be able to:
• outline and explain the objectives, principles as well as limitations of historical linguistics
• correctly date and adequately define the four major change phenomena – Language Contact, Typological Change, Great Vowel Shift, Standardization – and to evaluate their importance for the development of the English language
• give a systematic and exemplary analysis of the English language on the language description levels: Phonology, Morphology, Syntax, Semantics and Lexicology
• carefully describe the conjunction of historical and linguistic changes
• systematically discuss and evaluate different depictions of the development of the English language, and theories about major change phenomena in class
