Vorlesung Contemporary Critical Theory key terms and questions

What do we do in the process of reading? What are the ways in which meaning is made and how do we account for them? What notions of authorship, agency, sexuality, context and history come into play? And what are the poetics and politics of textual engagements? These are some of the questions raised in contemporary critical theories, which this lecture sets out to address by looking at fields such as Psychoanalysis, Structuralism, Deconstruction, Postcolonialism and Gender Theory. In the strict sense of the term, -theory” means to make visible what otherwise remains unseen. Accordingly, the aim of our enterprise is not to work our way through a long list of big names, but to see – discuss, think through and question – what issues may emerge from engaging with their work and what, if anything, we may actually do in the process of reading. Participants are required, therefore, to do some preparatory reading and strongly encouraged to formulate their own questions for each session. A reader with relevant excerpts will be provided - most of its material will be based on a selection from the following book: Literary Theory: An Anthology, eds Julie Rivkin & Michael Ryan (Blackwell 22004).
