Focusing on students’ critical engagement with media productions, this course will give students the opportunity to write their own reviews and discuss the various reactions to the most recent appearance of one of today’s most popular fantasy series. Taking advantage of the fact that the new season by and large coincides with the summer term, the first section of the course will focus on in-class discussions of our viewing experiences, which will be complemented by written review activities in students’ forums and journals. Apart from establishing general guidelines and criteria for reviewing (which will also help us to assess the critical reception of the series in the web), a particular focus will lie on the problems of adaptation. Therefore, the second (smaller) section of the course will also provide a theoretical and critical framework to adaptation theory, which will be applied to our in-depth analyses. Since a competent participation for this latter part requires a thorough knowledge of the novels which the series adapt, and in order to avoid -spoiler” outcries during the course, participants will be expected to have read ALL FIVE volumes of George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series that have been published so far. Participants must have read ALL FIVE VOLUMES of George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire series (i.e. A Game of Thrones, A Clash of Kings, A Storm of Swords, A Feast for Crows, A Dance with Dragons) by the beginning of the term.
