Both the so-called Web 2.0 as the ‘new’ form of the World Wide Web and ‘Außerschulische Lernorte’ as extracurricular learning environments have recently received increasing attention in EFL pedagogy - with a view to extending the possibilities for learning English to virtual and physical spaces outside the regular classroom. The Web 2.0 offers various interactive and communicative online media such as blogs, wikis and social networks that can be used productively and creatively in ELT. Similarly, extracurricular settings such as cinemas, museums or libraries offer enriching learning environments for working with film, art or literature. In this course, we will explore in what ways moving beyond classroom walls both virtually and physically can be beneficial for foreign language learning. We will also engage with the central role of media as ‘windows to the world’ in EFL pedagogy and critically scrutinize their potential for web-based and extracurricular learning environments. The media scope covered in this seminar will include online, auditory, visual and audiovisual media as well as new literary text types (e.g. graphic novels or app literature). After laying a sound theoretical foundation for harnessing the potential of media, Web 2.0 and ‘Außerschulische Lernorte’, we will continue to access selected learning environments and critically explore their contribution to learning English beyond the walls of the classroom (e.g. using blogs to work with literature, employing social networks for cultural and global learning, designing cinema projects for learning with films, or visiting art exhibitions with apps). Course participants will be required to participate actively, work on individual projects, and, if possible, join field trips.
