Inhalte: The office of the President of the United States is one of the most powerful in world politics. Apart from his role in international affairs, the American President likewise occupies a synecdochal position within the American society, symbolically representing the country and its people. Thus, investigating the office holder, his function, and the context of his term offers a unique insight and helps draw a picture of the United States from the times of the founding until today. This seminar aims to classify the American presidency historically, politically, as well as culturally. A closer look at selected examples of presidential communication will serve as a method to decode a president’s speech with regard to discourse, genre, as well as key cultural concepts. Together with an examination of the way the American President is depicted in popular culture, this shall illustrate the way a national identity is negotiated and, in the first place, created. Lernziele: Participants develop an understanding of the American presidency from different perspectives. They are able to draw connections between the president and American national identity. Students can apply a method to approach Presidential communication and are eventually able to critically reflect upon the way a president’s speech creates or reinforces an American self-understanding. Studium liberale (E3) Diese Veranstaltung ist im fachfremden Modul E3 nicht für 2-Fach Studierende der GeiWi und KuWi m. Englisch geeignet. Seminarsprache: Englisch. Zusätzlich sind Kenntnisse der deutschen Sprache in Wort und Schrift erforderlich (Lektüre deutschsprachiger Texte). Regelmäßige, aktive Teilnahme (schließt Präsentation von Gruppenarbeit ein); zusätzlich Impulsreferat und 3-seitiges Essay ODER 5-seitiges Essay (je 3 Cr.) oder Hausarbeit unter der Voraussetzung von Kenntnissen zum Verfassen wissenschaftlicher Arbeiten (4 Cr.). In E3 ist die regelmäßige, aktive Teilnahme mit Vor-/Nachbereitung neben dem erfolgreichem Bestehen Voraussetzung zum Scheinerwerb. Geduldet wird eine entschuldigte (!)
