This new course is being developed for the MA students and advanced LA students who see value improving their writing proficiency in English through creative applications. Participants will be able to give their imagination full rein! However, we will also concentrate on identifying and employing various rhetorical strategies which could be useful for both literary and non-literary professional tasks.
Marjorie Kanter, a American poet living in Madrid, will visit our seminar within the context of Anglistik’s annual Contemporary Writers’ Forum; she will both read her poems and conduct a writing workshop. Her minimalist poems with transcultural themes and sharp observations will provide tools for the students’ own poetry writing.
Excerpts from the works of renowned contemporary novelist Don DeLillo will provide a spectrum of rhetorical tactics. We will read his post-9/11 work Falling Man (2007) in its entirety. This novel is currently required reading for the NRW school syllabus, although many teachers find it inappropriate for the -Grundkurs- level - but I predict that its kinds of complexities will serve our purposes well.
Each student will produce a portfolio with a spectrum of types of creative writing. If we’re pleased with our products, we’ll stage a -reading” near the end of the semester, inviting friends and staff!
