D H Lawrence Major Novels

!! Please note: due to organisational reasons this course has become a Kompaktseminar that will take place 14.5.15 - 17.5.15 !! Though he was a prolific writer of short stories and poems, D. H. Lawrence is best known for his novels, two of which, The Rainbow and Lady Chatterley's Lover, were banned on the grounds of obscenity shortly after they were published. Today, Lawrence's works receive favourable critical attention and praise for their sensitive portrayal of characters and landscapes. In this course we will sample three, possibly four, of Lawrence's greatest novels, each representative of a major phase in his writings: Sons and Lovers for the early realist phase, The Rainbow as his first experimental, modernist novel, and Lady Chatterley's Lover as the culmination, or better repudiation, of his so-called leadership phase. Participants are expected to have read these three novels and to upload skeleton reading responses until 3.5.2015 on moodle. 1 page MAX per novel, bullet points.
