This year marks the 40th anniversary of -1968,- a date heavy with symbolism, signifying the climax and turning point of a decade of activism, reform, protest, violence and immense political, cultural and social transformations in the United States and other western nations. Our focus here will be on studying primary texts from the Sixties articulating critiques and visions of American society and Sixties counter-cultures, as well as looking at the development of scholarship on the Sixties, from studies by -participants- to controversies over the meaning and impact of the era. Your are expected to study chapters 29 to 31 of Boyer et al. The Enduring Vision, 4th ed. (Boston: Houghton Miffin, 2000) 812-891 IN PREPARATION for this seminar. There will be an online exam on this reading in the first week of the semester. Additional literature and material will be made available in a reader, on a reserve shelf (Semesterapparat) and through the accompanying online platform Moodle, where you will please register as early as possible (starting October). The password for the course will be available at my office door or via email. Participants are expected to give concise presentations on topics which will be assigned at the first session, at which attendance is mandatory. Please check your module handbooks on precisely what kind of written work has to be handed in for your particular course of study, in most cases this will be an extended paper of 20-25 pages.
