EFL learners face the problem of overcoming their fear of communicating and it is consequently vital for them to learn the language skills needed in real life situations. These skills need to be integrated into language lessons and one technique is to use cooperative learning. Cooperative learning means that students work both together and independently. The student’s role of a passive recipient changes into an active role in the learning process. Cooperative learning integrates different teaching methods in order to induce students to speak. In this seminar we will discuss different methods of cooperative learning and their implementation in EFL teaching. This course will combine the theory discussed with its practical applications. The participants will design a conversation course for advanced classes (Sek II) on the basis of cooperative learning. The material devised will be taught by the students in real classroom situations at schools. It is expected that students will participate actively and use the materials they devise in a classroom situation. The course consists of two parts: • discussions of theory in the seminar group • school visit when the theory discussed is applied in a practical teaching situation School dates: The school dates will be announced in the first session. Please note that each lesson lasts 120 minutes! Anglistik Universität Duisburg-Essen WS 2012/13 alle Lehrämter, alle Lehrämter Anglistik
