The class is aiming at the development of interdisciplinary professionalization of prospective teachers of the subjects English or French and the subject history (or other core subjects) in order to acquire CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning; -bilingualer Sachfachunterricht-) teaching skills in the subject history or related subjects.
A qualifying offer in this area is urgently required, because since 2011/12 CLIL lessons in the subject history (and other core subjects) are an integral part of the Hessian core curriculum of all types of school.
Students will learn about CLIL approaches and methods and the construct of culture. As the CLIL subject examplarily chosen will be history, we will focus on historical events that are remembered and known on an international, national, local or family level and events that we experienced ourselves. Therefore, this class will have a special focus on own life stories in the present and past. In order to implement this idea we will use Schmidt's ABCs of Cultural understanding and Communication as a model.
Participants will write down their own life stories (Step A) and then interview seniors (80 plus) and write down their stories (Step B). They will follow up with validation of the data. In Step C a list of similarities and differences and entries will be made in a Cultural Venn Diagram (Finkbeiner, 2009). This will serve as a data base for an in-depth analysis and metacognitive reflection in Step C (cross-cultural analyis). Cross-references between personal stories and historical events will be made, This allows for a multi-perspective approach (Human GPS) towards the construction of history not only from a general textbook but also from a personal and individual point of view.
