HS: New Aestheticism The rise of literary theory from the 1970s onwards coincided with the rise of an anti-aestheticism, a loss of interest in the aesthetic impact of literary works of art. As a result, questions about art's specificity as an aesthetic phenomenon (e.g. the role of aesthetic experience, the truth of art, the endurance of certain artworks, artistic genius) have almost entirely disappeared from view. The -new aestheticism- is a literary critical and theoretical movement that seeks to set the balance right by a renewed (and theoretically informed) interest in aesthetic concerns. In this course, we shall divide our attention between theoretical issues in aesthetics and a practical criticism of literature. Selected philosophical texts chiefly by I. Kant and T.W. Adorno will serve as a background for our discussion of plays and poems by Shakespeare and a number of contemporary poets. As part of our critical activity we shall also explore (and test) ways of reintroducing value judgements into the study of literature. All set texts will be provided in a reader.
