Dieses Hauptseminar taucht tief in die Darstellung von Tod, Sterben und Trauer in der anglo-amerikanischen Literatur des 19. und 20. Jahrhunderts ein. Du analysierst, wie Autoren diese oft tabuisierten Themen nutzen, um Identität zu formen, Ängste zu verarbeiten oder philosophische Fragen zu stellen. Anhand vielfältiger Texte, von Gedichten bis zu Romanen, diskutierst du die unterschiedlichen literarischen Zugänge zu unserer Sterblichkeit.
Das wirst du lernen
- Du verstehst, wie die Auseinandersetzung mit Sterblichkeit unsere Identität prägt und in der Literatur reflektiert wird.
- Du analysierst verschiedene literarische Strategien, um Tod, Sterben und Trauer in anglo-amerikanischer Literatur darzustellen.
- Du erkennst die unterschiedlichen Funktionen von Tod in literarischen Texten, von der Handlung bis zur philosophischen Reflexion.
- Du entwickelst deine Fähigkeiten zur kritischen Textanalyse und Diskussion komplexer literarischer Werke des 19. und 20. Jahrhunderts.
- Du setzt dich mit kulturellen Tabus und der Repression des Todes in der Gesellschaft auseinander, wie sie in der Literatur verhandelt werden.

It is usually stated that the awareness of our own mortality and the knowledge of our certain death shapes our sense of identity as human beings. Since death, however, cannot be grasped and understood by us while we are still alive, it inspires fear and fascination in many people, often at the same time.
Frequently personified as 'The Grim Reaper' or 'The Great Leveller', death remains annoyingly (or consolingly) elusive and to those who are still alive it is through mourning the dead that we can temporarily engage with death.
As death is omnipresent but also an often repressed or tabooed subject matter it has always been one of the most obsessively represented topics in literature - sometimes as a mere plot device (e.g. in tragedy, gothic fiction or crime novels), but also as a starting point for a quasi-philosophical enquiry into the essence of death (and life).
In this seminar we will read and discuss a wide range of 19th and 20th century poetic, dramatic and narrative texts which revolve around different forms of dying and mourning. We will start with Tennyson's long poem In Memoriam A.H.H.
It is imperative that you have read Tennysons's In Memoriam A.H.H. for the first session. Your knowledge of this text will be tested by a quiz.
