Participatory Leadership and Facilitation towards Sustainable Development
(3 ECTS points)
How many conferences have you gone to where half the audience is texting, surfing or falling asleep? How many group discussions have you attended where a few people dominate the conversation and the rest of the group are either unhappy or indifferent? How many meetings occur in government, businesses, and communities where, at the end of the meeting, nothing productive has happened because no one can agree on anything because no one is listening?
Participatory process methods are increasingly and effectively being used in a variety of disciplines and settings including government, science, academia, business, science, and communities to engage stakeholders towards reaching a common understanding of pressing issues at hand. These methods can also produce positive action and change for individuals, groups and society. This course seeks to give its participants the exposure and experience of using these methods as they move into professional roles where communication and dialogue can be a component to success. The course is geared towards students going into any profession.
The goal of the course is to reflect upon this multi-pronged question:
What are ways of engaging individuals and groups of people that can help: facilitate a shared understanding of sustainable development challenges and opportunities; design a space for constructive dialogue and brainstorming to address those challenges and opportunities; and lead to inspiring strategic partnerships and action towards innovating solutions?
Because of the participatory nature of the course, it will be important to attend the course in its entirety.
