PS African Memoirs: Anthropological Novels and Novel Anthropologies Whether or not it is appropriate to include personal accounts in ethnographic discourse is an ongoing debate in anthropology. For some time now, the manifold conventions of ethnographic representation to which most ethnographers tacitly adhere have been subsumed under the heading -ethnographic realism”. One of the its key characteristics being that authors following its rhetoric scrupulously avoid any reference to personal struggles and emotional experiences during fieldwork. There is, however, a growing number of field accounts that purposely break with ethnographic realism’s genre conventions. Fear, anger, weariness, lust, fatigue, tastes, sounds, and smells … topics that have been widely excluded from -scientific” representations, figure prominently in the narratives we will read over the curse of the semester. After initial discussions on the relationship of literature and science in general, the seminar will do a close reading of anthropological texts on Africa in which the ethnographer features as a distinctive character in the stories of his or her fieldwork. Far from being just sidekicks to anthropological introspection, in these texts also the -natives” are often painted far more vivid and colourful than in anthropological standard literature. As a consequence, readers might in fact learn more about other societies from -unscientific” texts than from their scholarly counterparts. Bearing in mind the limits of narrativity, we will thus approach the ethnography of Africa the easy way. Participants are expected to give an oral presentation (Referat) during the semester. Written term papers (Hausarbeiten) can be submitted in English or German. Ü afrikanische Literatur: afrikanische Stimmen Afrika verfügt über facettenreiche literarische Traditionen. Die Übung beschäftigt sich mit verschiedenen SchriftstellerInnen und ihren Werken. Eingangs findet die Vertiefung einiger theoretischer Aspekte statt. Die Übung bewegt sich dabei von frühen Afrikanischen Stimmen über Beispiele postkolonialer Literatur zu jüngeren Werken. Einen bisher in Deutschland wenig beachteten Zugang werden Afrikanische Comics bieten. Auch die Positionierung von Frauen in den neueren Afrika-Romanen werden in der Übung perspektiviert. Die verschiedenen intertextuellen Bezüge und ihre Verwobenheit mit den kollektiven Gedächtnissen sollen im Verlauf des Semesters helfen, einige Eckpunkte herauszubilden. In dieser Übung werden historische und gegenwärtige Perspektivierungen auf die Afrikanischen Stimmen ausgearbeitet. Von den TeilnehmerInnen wird eine aktive Teilnahme und die Übernahme eines Kurzreferates (7 Minuten) zu einem/r AutorIn und Werk gefordert. Die Texte werden nach Möglichkeit in englischer Sprache und in der deutschen Übersetzung bereit gestellt. Die Übung findet alle zwei Wochen zweistündig statt.
