In contrast to written texts, which offer the reader a lot of freedom of imagination regarding the presented story, films make definite decisions by the use of visual as well as acoustic codes. This course will introduce students to the vocabulary of -film language-. We are going to focus the different analytical levels, like mise-en-scène, the shot, editing, sound etc. and examine the way in which these elements combine in the process of meaning making.
Students are supposed to hand in a statement of about 500 words by 15 August 2014 in which they suggest one suitable film they would like to analyse and give reasons why they think it would be worth considering. The best proposals will be included in the list of films dealt with in the seminar. The list will be sent to participants in advance. (Students registering for the course in the second LSF-round need to hand in a statement by the start of term)
Please note that the course requires a lot of preparation and self study as students will have to do weekly assignments, like analysing film sequences, researching and reading secondary material, preparing study questions etc. Since there will be no presentations in class, students have to participate actively in plenary discussions and smaller study groups.
