Every day we encounter a huge variety of advertising messages competing with each other to attract our attention, to inform, influence, and persuade us. As only a limited amount of space and/or time is available to reach these primary goals, the various verbal and visual signs of ads need to be highly effective. In this course, we will use semiotic and linguistic tools to study (mainly printed) advertising. Some of the topics we will be dealing with are: meaning and feature transfer, indexicality and iconicity, language play and rhetorical figures, text-picture relationships, pictorial metaphors, intertextuality, intermediality and self-reference in advertising. In order to participate in this seminar, the following task is obligatory for everyone in the first meeting: Select and bring to class an advertisement of your choice (a print advertisement, a TV commercial, a flyer, a poster, a banner etc.) which you think is interesting from a linguistic and/or semiotic point of view. In a short text (printed, not hand-written!) of approx. 400 words describe the advertisement and the points of interest for a linguist and/or semiotician. Bring to class two copies of your text, one of which you will be asked to hand in. A reader is required for the very first meeting. It will be available at CopyBlitz, Holländische Str. 17, by the beginning of October. A reserve shelf will be available in the library (BB2) at the beginning of October.
