Mobile applications cover multiple domains of our leisure and professional life such as commerce, learning, entertainment, and health etc.For devices containing sensitive personal information/data and accessing the Internet, security becomes nowadays a major issue. In this course, various topics will be addressed in the light of building secure mobile applications such as mobile software engineering, mobile platforms (i.e. iPhone and Android), and special categories of collaborative mobile applications based on location and context awareness, just to name some. The course targets the Masters' students and intends to address the following content: 1. Introduction 1.1 Motivation (Emerging mobile market, risks, threats etc.) 1.2 Concepts and definitions (BSI and other Institutions etc.) 1.3 Focus of the course (Security/Privacy and target scenarios, device-centric usage scenarios, shared data in social interaction settings etc.) 1.4 Course content and structure 2. Revisiting Security Essentials and Basic Concepts 2.1 Top mobile security topics and issues 2.2 Operating Systems, Distributed Systems and Software Engineering Basics 2.2.1 Processes and running programs 2.2.2 Access control and memory management 2.2.3 I/O, Network access and distributed systems 2.2.3 Mobile applications architectures and design 2.2.4 Principle design patterns 3. Mobile Platforms Security 3.1 Overview of the existing platforms (iPhone, Android, Symbian OS, JavaME etc.) 3.2 Capabilities of the different platforms in the light of building secure applications 3.3 Other possibilities: Accessing data without OS or application etc. 4.
