Megacities have become a prominent feature in urban development in the last few decades, and their future development can be seen as one of the major challenges for urban planners in the years to come. Rapid urbanization, especially in the Global South has produced very complex mega-urban regions that are difficult to plan using the conventional tools of Western planning. Migration and extreme social polarization, infrastructure provision, degraded environmental conditions and excessive resource consumption have created difficult challenges. As these cities mature, questions of urban regeneration have become more and more important. Nevertheless, the ideologies and challenges of regeneration are as different from the situation in Germany as are the political systems and planning traditions. The module will explore major issues of urban regeneration in megacities by looking at complex case studies from different parts of the world. The Global South (including China) will be a major focus of the module. Introductions by the lecturers will be complemented by other forms of information transfer such as film, documentaries, and guest lectures. Students will get involved in group work, case study presentations and essay writing. The module will be taught in English.
Main themes:
Definition of mega-cities, rural-urban migration, urban regeneration, planning and political control, socio-economic and spatial features of megacities including inequality, informality, and spatial segregation. Lectures will focus on: housing, infrastructure, transportation, governance, and megacity-regional relationships.
Possible case studies (non-exhaustive list):
Moscow, Istanbul, Hongkong, Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou, Mumbai, Dhaka, Jakarta, Tehran, Mexico City, Saõ Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Buenos Aires, Caracas, Cairo, Lagos, Johannesburg, Tokyo, Ankara
