The rapid urbanization especially in the Global South has produced very complex mega-urban regions that can hardly be planned and orderly developed with the help of conventional tools of western planning. Migration and extreme social polarization, infrastructure provision, degraded environmental conditions and excessive resource consumption have created difficult challenges. As some of them show clear signs of consolidation and maturity, policies in the field of urban regeneration have become more and more important. Nevertheless, the ideologies and challenges of regeneration are as different from the situation in Germany as are the political systems and planning traditions. The module will explore major issues of urban regeneration in megacities by looking at complex case studies from different parts of the world. The global south will be a major focus of the module. Introductions by the lecturers will possibly be complemented by other elements of information transfer such as TV documentaries and guest lectures. Students will get involved in group work, case study presentations and essay writing. The module will be taught in English.
A field trip to Mumbai and Singapore is planned for the winter semester. The module will serve as general introduction and background information.
